Manila Major Group Stage Begins
The third and final Dota 2 Major event of 2016 started off today in Manlia, Philippines. Featuring 16 of the world’s best teams, the Major will run for 9 days, beginning with a group phase, after which the top 2 teams of each group will move up to the Upper bracket of the main event phase, while the bottom 2 will go to the Lower bracket.
The 12 invited teams include Secret, Liquid, Evil Geniuses, MVP Phoenix, Wings Gaming, Vici Gaming Reborn, Fnatic, OG, Complexity, Alliance, Natus Vincere, and LGD Gaming. The remaining 4 teams – Digital Chaos, Newbee, Empire, and Mineski – won their respective regional qualifiers.
Day one decided the main stage placement of the teams in Group A, consisting of Newbee, OG, Empire, and Complexity; and teams in Group B – Na’Vi, Digital Chaos, Wings Gaming, and Secret. The full results are below:
Similar to their destructive run at Epicenter a few weeks back, China’s Newbee easily took first place in Group A after beating both Complexity and OG with decisive 2-0 victories; better yet, none of the games went past the 35 minute mark.
But OG managed to beat Empire in a 2-0 series themselves, and after the two teams were tied for second place, played yet another series, where OG emerged victories once again with a score of 2-1. Complexity lost all 4 of their games, ending up dead last in the group.
Group B certainly had a lot more potential for upsets and surprises, given that it included the recently-returned allstars Na’Vi, Digital Chaos – the fairly new NA team with big names, and China’s Wings Gaming, the the team nobody knew about that beat Liquid 3-0 to take first place at ESL One Manila just 5 weeks ago.
Na’Vi started off by reasserting the strength of their recent comeback with 2-0 victories over both Secret and DC. Although Digital Chaos did force them into a 90 minute game two and looked poised to win the match, Na’Vi crushed their hopes by teleporting to their base and quickly taking out the throne.
Meanwhile, Secret continued their poor performance ever since the Spring roster change, ending up dead last in the group after a 2-1 loss to Wings. After beating Wings 2-1, DC then played them again to see who would take the #2 spot; this time however, they got a 2-0 victory.
The action continues tomorrow with Groups C and D. Be sure to check out all the past and upcoming games on Twitch, or in-game through the Dota client.
